There are numerous flowers that bloom throughout the spring and during the month of May. Choosing which ones to buy and plant can be a difficult choice. May is a thriving blooming season for most regions, since it is either the beginning of summer or end of spring.

DAFFODIL

Also referred to narcissus, daffodils are a popular May flower. Daffodils “are hardy, pest free, disease free, naturalize well, live for years with no work, multiply if left alone, and come in a wide variety of flower colors, heights, sizes and flower shapes.

TULIP

Tulips have long been the most celebrated spring flower. Standing tall and straight, they come in an extensive variety of colors and heights. Their showy blooms and more than 100 species make them an excellent spring flower for any garden.

ROSE

As the most famed flower in the world, roses make a striking impression in any garden. Their flowers come in many colors besides the staple red. A metaphor for love and beauty, the rose is commonly used as a cut flower for special occasions and moments, though their blooms begin to decorate gardens throughout the month of May.

Roses require an abundance of both water and sunlight. Good soil is also necessary for planting rose bushes. Remember to trim dead roots before planting the bush in fertilized soil.

ZINNIA

Zinnias have large blooms and come in a variety of colors. Easy to grow, zinnias bloom starting in late spring and last until the first frost. This makes them an ideal candidate for summer gardens, since their color and beauty will last throughout the season rather than just a few short weeks. Common bloom colors include white, orange, yellow, red, rose, pink, purple and lilac.

Zinnias are easy to grow from seed. Plant them after the danger of frost has passed. As an annual flower, zinnias will die after frost befalls them, so be careful not to plant too early.

PEONIES

These flowers produce large, fragrant blooms in late spring in shades of white, red or yellow. Set and plant peonies during the fall for a spring bloom. Make sure the flowers receive adequate water, and the peonies will come back for years to come.

OTHER MAY FLOWERS

Additional May blooming flowers include the mountain laurel, giant aliums, clematis and hyacinth. Many other flowers also bloom during this time. Check the hardiness zones for each flower before planting to ensure blooms will correlate with the month of May.
